🌋 Mauna Kea: Hawaii's Towering Giant 🗻

Published 12 days ago • 1 min read

Towering above the lush landscapes of the Hawaiian Islands, Mauna Kea stands as the world's tallest mountain, a majestic giant that defies expectations.

Many of the places I research benefit everyone, including me! However, I’ve been to the top of this one in Hawaii. It's amazing how, at the base, it’ll be 80 degrees, but on top of the mountain, it'll be about 35 degrees! And the windchill brought it down to a “real feel” in the teens! Not typical for Hawaii!

At an impressive height of 33,500 feet (10,210 meters) from base to summit, this dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii is a true marvel of nature. 🌍 (I loved the Big Island!)

While its summit may seem modest at 13,796 feet (4,205 meters) above sea level, the true grandeur of Mauna Kea lies beneath the surface. Its base extends an incredible 19,700 feet (6,000 meters) below the Pacific Ocean, making it taller than Mount Everest when measured from its underwater foundation. 🌊

Mauna Kea's unique geology and remote location have made it a prime destination for astronomical observation. Atop its summit, you'll find some of the world's most advanced telescopes, taking advantage of the clear skies and excellent viewing conditions. 🔭

Beyond its scientific significance, Mauna Kea holds deep cultural and spiritual importance for the Native Hawaiian community. Its slopes are considered sacred grounds, and traditional practices and ceremonies are still carried out by the island's indigenous people. 🌺

Whether you're drawn by its awe-inspiring stature, its astronomical wonders, or its cultural richness, Mauna Kea promises an unforgettable experience. Embrace the opportunity to witness this towering giant and unravel the mysteries that lie within its majestic embrace. 🌌

And hear the legends of the Hawaiian God Poli’ahu, the goddess of snow!

Let Aloha be your guide, and you'll never be lost.”

🕰️ In 2000, photographer Suzi Altman stumbled upon a vibrant roadside wonder – Margaret's Grocery in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Greeted by Reverend H.D. "Preacher" Dennis, adorned in Mardi Gras beads and seersucker pants, she was captivated by the multicolored monolith adorned with hand-scrawled spirituality. "I just fell in love immediately," Altman reminisced. 💞 (Courtesy of the Vicksburg Convention & Visitors Bureau) 📿 A fixture along Highway 61, the grocery was a kaleidoscope of mosaics,...
